Video Technique for Painting a Textured Rusty Background on this DIY Stenciled Coffee Sign

by Patricia Rawlinson on April 21, 2021

When you are feeling creative and really want to nail a gnarly rough and textured background... you turn to nature... wood shavings mixed into the paint creates the most amazing and natural feeling effect. The paint and wood shavings mix well together and the stencils work great with the texture after the mix is dry.

I wanted to add some extra "mixed media" textured grange to this DIY painted coffee sign, (isn't the wood coffee cup cut out cute? ) CLICK HERE for the wood surface and CLICK HERE for the stencil and wood set and HERE for just the stencil.

I mixed up some rust effect using sand in my paint (regular 'ol acrylic paints) I used the brown color, then stipple the orange sand mix and a hi-light of the yellow sand mix to make the rust really look like active rust.  (This mix is made with paint = Sand + Glue + dry wall paste) I found the recipe on this website

I use Dome Stencil Brushes to keep the paint from bleeding under the stencil. These are the best stencil brushes I have ever used.

Watch the video to see all the details and please comment and ask questions! We love to hear what you have to say!
