What size stencil do I need to paint my floor tile?
Pattern stencils will come in several sizes. When you are trying to decide what size stencil to use, you will want to get a good measurement of the tile you are painting over. You will measure the tile from edge to edge - do not include the grout lines. If your surface doesn't have tile, you get to determine if you want the stencil small or larger.
You may have to cut your stencil to get into some nooks and crannies close to the wall. Stencil the portion that allows for the full stencil before cutting. In some instances, you may want to get 2 of the stencils so you have a full one and one you can cut.
What kind of paint should I use for stenciling on my floor?
First you'll want to use a TSP wash and let it dry thoroughly. Next, you will use a primer. We like the Kilz brand. Then once the primer is dry, do a scratch test to make sure it isn't going to peel up.
When it comes to what type of paint to use, you can paint with house paint. Patio paint is also a good option because it sticks really well.
When you are finished with your project, you will seal it with a good water based polyurethane for three coats.
Be sure to let each coat dry completely before moving on to the next step. Patience is key.
Are there any safety precautions for stenciling on my floor?
You will want to be sure you have enough ventilation. Open a window and have a fan going - as long as it won't blow dust or particles onto your newly painted floor.
How do you repeat a tile stencil?
With some patterns, you will just be able to paint the stencil over and over - and the entire pattern is on one stencils. Like this Mandala Glass Stencil:
Other designs will be repeated to make a pattern. You'll do this by doing a 90 degree turn with the stencils. This is shown in the video above, and the photo below.
